Life Story

This toolkit is for use by people with lived experience of distress and their family, friends and workers to share guidance and ideas for life story work.

It has been created by people with lived experience of distress and recovery and by people who have experience of trying the ideas out.

The toolkit, currently still in it's pilot phase, offers a range of suggestions and ideas - they are not intended to be prescriptive.  We are happy for you to use any of the ideas and welcome any comments for improvement or suggestions for new ideas or variations. Through feedback from people using this resource, we intend to keep developing and improving this material. Please let us know if you spot any links that don't work or that you feel are missing using this contact form.

In time, we hope to share more examples of people's life story work. If you want to inspire others with examples of your own life story work or someone you have worked with, please use the downloadable consent form and email us with some information about what you produced along with some photographs if you have them.

Ideas contributed and experimented with by Penny, Isabel, Fiona, Brick and others at Making Waves along with Helen Moya, Helen Baxter and Helen Brown. This project has been funded through a MIN from the Institute of Mental Health.

  • I think you are doing a good job with your Life Stories project: Well done!

I just wanted to say that I have written a memoir, 'Surviving Schizophrenia' by Louise Gillett, and I found the experience truly cathartic.
